Teaching
I am a language educator and teacher trainer with over a decade's worth experience in curriculum design. While the content of my classes varies, my overall goal in teaching is to help students gain critical thinking, to widen their perspectives, to improve their ability to communicate in writing and speaking, and to foster in them curiosity for learning and respect for people with diverse backgrounds or diverse experiences. I regularly teach courses focus on the intersection of language and culture and that deal with sensitive topics (e.g. U.S immigration). I also routinely teach writing courses, including basic writing.
Skills I have developed through teaching
Through my teaching, I have developed and strengthened the following skills:
- Ability to present materials to audiences with and without background on the topics.
- Ability to plan, design, and deliver content (e.g. activities, workshops)
- Ability to use course management systems like D2L, Canvas, as well as other technologies like Kaltura and Collaborate Ultra.
- Ability to design courses and activities that match learning goals I create.
- Ability to conduct needs analyses to determine what changes to make to class content.
- Ability to troubleshoot and handle conflict.
Teaching Philosophy
Overall, as an educator, I value introspection, accountability, and transferability--or the ability to apply knowledge. A statement of my teaching philosophy can be found here
